Junior doctors call off strike after Kamineni’s assurance

Guntur: Junior doctors called off their strike in Guntur Government General Hospital (GGH) on Monday.Health Minister Kamineni Srinivas and Health Department officials assured the junior doctors that severe action will be taken against Professor Lakshmi in connection with the suicide death of PG medical student Sandhya Rani in the GGH campus.

Police Department officials, Medical Collage Principal Subba Rao and GGH Superintendent Raju Naidu conducted several meetings with representatives of Andhra Pradesh Junior Doctor Association (APJUDA) right from Monday morning and urged them to call off their protest and resume services to protect lives of poor patients.

APJUDA member Nageswara Rao demanded that the State government should arrest gynecologist Professor Lakshmi because she had harassed PG student Sandhya Rani in her department. He alleged that unable to bear the torture, Sandhya Rani committed suicide in the campus on October 23.
APJUDA has given only temporary call off strike in GGH if government would not take any action on professor Lakshmi, APJUDA will call state wide strike” he added.

He also mentioned junior doctors will conduct one-hour strike every day in the GGH premises demanding justice to PG student Sandhya Rani and also demanded severe action against Professor Lakshmi. “APJUDA will also fight legally against Professor Lakshmi,” he added.

Guntur Medical College (GMC) Principal Subba Rao said that the GMC will provide a complaint box in the college premises to take feedback from all department students to prevent recurrence of student suicide cases. He also said that the junior doctors gave a written letter to call off strike in the campus. He urged all staff members in the college to treat the students as their family members and ensure better health care is provided to the poorest of the poor in coastal Andhra.

GGH Superintendent Raju Naidu had appointed as many as 42 Medical and Health department staff, 10 Primary Health Centre doctors, 9O D Pharmacy students and 280 nurses from outside nurses to take care of the patients while the junior doctors were in strike demanding arrest of Professor Lakshmi. Meanwhile, GMC gynecologist Professor Lakshmi applied for anticipatory bail in the Guntur district court but the judge postponed hearing in the case to November 3.
