Chittoor: Vegetable market complex which was constructed at Kongareddypalli by Chittoor municipality at a cost of Rs 43 lakh is lying idle.
Former Chief Minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy had inaugurated the market ten years ago and said it would be a boon to vegetable vendors in the city.
It has 13 well furnished shops for vendors to store vegetables. The Kongareddypalli vegetable market would have catered to the needs of two-third population of the city if it came into existence by now.
It may be recalled here that former Chittoor MLA C K Babu was responsible for constructing the vegetable market as he impressed upon Rajasekhara Reddy to sanction funds.
After the inauguration, several vendors came forward to start vegetable business in the market but backed off as the civic body reportedly failed to provide minimum
facilities.
The market complex has been lying idle for the last ten years as no vendor took initiative to start business.
Now, market complex has become a shelter zone for beggars and orphans.
Recently, the Chittoor Municipal Corporation had made an attempt to let out shops on lease at vegetable market but no one turned up.
Rumours were rife that Chittoor MP and MLA Dr N Sivaprasad and DA Satyaprabha respectively did not made efforts to revive vegetable market due to their own political interests.
Meanwhile, C K Babu and his partners took two shops on lease for setting up their local television network.
Speaking to The Hans India, Govinda Rajulu, a vegetable vendor, said that officials concerned did not pay attention for developing the market complex.
As one more new vegetable market has come up near Chittoor bus station at the behest of TDP leaders, there was no response to Kongareddypalli vegetable market from vendors, he added.
