Spread over two sessions, they analysed the current higher educational trends across the globe, particularly in Commonwealth countries.
In the first session on ‘Governance, Policies and Reforms’ V-C, Central University of Tamil Nadu, Prof AP Dash said that decline in the standard of quality is due to number of problems like governance, finance allocation, research management with API score and the declining quality of research and publications.
V-C, DY Patil Vidyapeeth, Pune Prof PN Razdan mentioned that by 2030, 80 per cent of Indian universities would be in the private sector.
More autonomy should be given to improve the quality. V-C, Hindustan University, Chennai Prof S Ramachandran, said that in India the budget allocations to higher education are lower than any other with just 0.85% in GDP.
The Indian higher education is underfunded and over regulated. Examination system should be re-designed for quality, he added.
Director, Andhra Pradesh State Skill Development Corporation (APSSDC) Dr K Lakshmi Narayana said that there is a need to move with the changing times and class room teaching is effective and efficient for the students to only understand the basic concept of the content.
In the second session on “Curricula, Pedagogy and Technology” chaired by Prof Yogesh Singh, he said that students are against mandatory attendance as there is nothing new in class teaching.
VC Berhampur University, Odisha, Prof Rajendra opined that curricular design is a need. Many a time syllabi is framed according to wishes and capabilities of the teacher ignoring the needs.
A curriculum should include knowledge skills and values. Lecture method is outdated and participatory method will improve the quality.
Prof Mohan Diman, spoke on patent issues. He said that Indian projects stop at inventions but don’t reach the need levels innovation and interpretation which usually increase funds. The meet also stressed on the fact that 80 per cent of graduates are unemployable in India and nearly 17 per cent of them are only getting quantity education.
To overcome the problems faced by the students, Prof A Damodaram, V-C, SV University said that he is proposing a new framework - Digital Education Eco System (DEES) - to the student community across the globe.
This programme is very helpful to the students of India and abroad to improve their qualifications and skills which turn make them better employable.
