Kadapa: In view of bringing allopathic medicines available at cheaper prices to the small and marginal families, the district administration is planning to set up Generic Medicine Stores (GMS) in all mandal headquarters and main towns in Kadapa district.

It may be recalled that under Jana Aushadhi Scheme (JAS), the Central government has sanctioned 1,000 shops to Andhra Pradesh, out of which 76 were allocated to Kadapa district.

According to the official sources, the GMS were sanctioned in two phases. In the first part, the GMS were established in government hospitals and in the second phase it would be established in various towns. The administration has proposed to spent Rs 2.50 lakh for setting up each store.

Following the directions of the State government, the district administration is willing to allocate the GMS to the Self-Help Groups (SHGs) as part of efforts in uplifting their living standards, and necessary training would be provided to them for the same.

In case SHGs are not willing to take up, next priority would be given to the pharmacists. Officials are on the job of completing the selection process on a war footing.

“Our aim is to create awareness among the public to opt for generic drugs for chronic ailments as much as possible,” an official said.

It may be recalled that 11 GMS were running in the name of Anna Sanjivani Stores (ASS) from October 2, 2016 in the district by making available 600 medicines at mandal level, while 1,000 drugs at district headquarters.

“Purchasing medicines at ASS is more beneficial to the small and medium income families especially patients suffering with chronic diseases. It’s a good initiative by State and Central governments as we can save 60% on medical bills,” said K Vara Prasad of YV street in Kadapa city.
