Vijayawada: The stage is set for the launch of first of its kind National Women’s Parliament (NWP), which is aimed at facilitating an interaction among women from diverse backgrounds like politics, social sector, education, sports, industry, media, cinema, arts and culture, judiciary and the young aspiring students, women legislators and parliamentarians of India and abroad where they will come up with new ideas, concepts, theories and ideologies pertaining to women empowerment.
The NWP, scheduled to begin at Pavitra Sangamam at Ibrahimpatnam near here on February 10, will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Prime Minister Narendra Modi through a tele-conference.
The main objectives of the NWP is to sensitise the society about common issues like malnutrition among women and children, social security, sexual harassment, attacks, oppression and other gender based problems and their complexities at local, national and international levels.
The meet also wants to make young girls to realise their potential and aware of the canvas where they can leave their footprints.
Providing equal opportunities to women in all segments and levels of society and empowering them are also the key objectives of NWP, said AP Assembly Speaker Kodela Siva Prasada Rao, the organiser of NWP, on Thursday.
“Our endeavour is to enhance the network between eminent women and girl students to enable them to take leadership roles,” he added.
The event will be attended by Buddhist spiritual leader Dalai Lama, who arrived at Vijayawada on Thursday.
Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly is organising the event and the State government is hosting it with support of Commonwealth Parliamentary Association and Inter-Parliamentary Union and others.
According to organisers, 91 women parliamentarians, 401 women legislators, 300 social and corporate sector women leaders from India and abroad are going to attend the meet.
Governor E S L Narasimhan, Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan, Bangladesh Parliament Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje Scindia, Puducherry Lieutenant Governor Kiran Bedi, noted Gandhian Ela Bhatt, veteran singer Lata Mangeshkar, actresses Juhi Chawla and Manisha Koirala, tennis star Sania Mirza, Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus and a host of other luminaries will attend the event.
