It’s the mango season… Everyone wants to taste avakaya (mango pickle prepared with mustard powder) during the summer season. Every household in the Telugu states will be busy making avakaya in the season. The gustatory delight of avakaya is now fetching income to rural women over two-and-a-half months.

The gustatory delight of avakaya is now fetching income to rural women over two-and-a-half months. The cottage industry is providing employment to over 100 to 125 in cutting the mangoes in Ravikampadu village of Kamavarapukota mandal in West Godavari district.
Some entrepreneurs in Ravikampadu village purchasing the mangoes from the orchards in the upland area of the West Godavari district at market rate during every season. They bring the purchased mangoes to their cottage units. They engage workers to cut, peel the mangoes and pickle them in salt. About 100 to 125 workers, mostly women, are engaged in this work. They pack the pickled mangoes to transport them to Gujarat, Kolkata, Nasik (Maharashtra) on demand. Each worker easily cuts 500-750 kgs of mangoes into pieces.
The pickled mango pieces mixed with chilli powder will be stored over six months. These mango strips are used to prepare ‘Magayi’, a famous mango pickle. R Kalavathi, a worker in the cottage industry says that they work here during the mango season and earns around Rs 450 to Rs 600 per day. “The work does not seem difficult and it’s just like working in our own house. We are earning money without going farther,” She says.
S Meena, another worker from Ravikampadu village expresses her happiness to work here. “The owner provides the necessary tools like cutlery to cut the mangoes. We easily cut over 500 to 750 Kgs of mangoes per day and earn up to Rs. 800” Interestingly, the male workers from Raebareli of Uttar Pradesh come to Ravikampadu during the season and work for two and half months.
Rathiya, a worker from Raebareli in Uttar Pradesh said that about 13 workers from Raebareli came to this village to do this work during the season. We cut the mangoes during these two and half month season and earn around Rs. 30,000 to Rs. 40,000. “We are happy with our earnings during the season,” he said.
V Srinivasa Rao, the owner of this Cottage Industry told The Hans India that he was doing this business for the last four years. “We pickle the mango pieces in salt and transport to other states on order. These salt pickled pieces can be stored up to six months. We will supply the mango pieces for avakaya to Gudiwada area. The mango strips which are used to prepare magaya (dry mango pickle)are sent to Kolkata, Gujarat and other states.
The purchasers export these strips to Dubai”, he added. “We sell these mango pieces and strips on Rs.2 to Rs 3 profit per bag to export. We get around two lakh rupees income during the season. We purchase the mangoes from the farmers in nearby orchards on market rate,” he stated.
