In a bid to provide nutritious food to 10,000 SC families that are below poverty line, the department of animal husbandry is gearing up to supply 10,000 rural backyard poultry units in the financial year 2017-18. Each unit consists of 45 birds and will be supplied in two instalments of 20 and 25 each, in the gap of three weeks.
Vijayawada: In a bid to provide nutritious food to 10,000 SC families that are below poverty line, the department of animal husbandry is gearing up to supply 10,000 rural backyard poultry units in the financial year 2017-18. Each unit consists of 45 birds and will be supplied in two instalments of 20 and 25 each, in the gap of three weeks.

Each family will get one unit and four-weeks-old rainbow roosters will be supplied to the rural SC families on the subsidy price. The beneficiaries can rear the birds to get eggs, which have high nutritional value.The Rural Backyard Poultry (RBP) scheme is implemented by the Central government to provide nutritious food to rural people. Besides, it is also decided to strengthen the rural economy by encouraging poultry sector.
Meanwhile, the state government has entered into an MoU with agencies, which will supply either eggs or birds.Speaking to The Hans India director of the department of Animal husbandry G Somasekharam, said that each rainbow rooster bird would weigh about 4 kg and lays eggs with high nutrient content.
“The scheme will be implemented under the Rural Backyard Poultry (RBP) programme to ensure readymade food to the rural people. The government is giving a subsidy of Rs 50 on each bird and the beneficiary has to pay only Rs 18,” he added.
Stating that even elderly people can rear the birds, he said that the government would supply night shelter coup worth Rs 500 to keep the birds safe during the nights.
“Rainbow roosters are different from the white poultry birds. They have brown and red feathers and will be supplied after attaining the disease-resistance age of four weeks. The RBP scheme will be implemented under the SC/ST sub-plan,” Somasekharam informed.
