Hyderabad: During the good old days when water was munificently available comments made more in jest that this precious resource would in the future come with a price tag attached was met with incredulity. But, over the years the prediction has become realistic with water becoming a precious commodity.

There are many reasons attributed to the fast depleting groundwater and river resources, but all these zeroes in on irrational utilisation and gross wastage of water. Though it may have sounded too far-fetched in a distant past, the saying that ‘every drop makes an ocean’ has gained relevance.

The fact that the water scarcity is man-made becomes conspicuously evident from the little or no thought given to measured utilisation of water. The importance of measured and calculated use of water for various purposes is yet to be ingrained in our collective conscience.

We need to take a leaf out of Sachin Tendulkar’s quote that one bucketful of water is enough to take a bath. A majority of them may take this advice with a pinch of salt, but there is much more than a grain of truth in what the cricketing legend said. The reality is that this is the quantum of water required for a shower.

Likewise, we have the tendency to waste water without sparing a thought to the consequences. The taps are kept in full flow even while we wash our hands while a trickle is enough for this purpose. Constructing rainwater harvesting structures can facilitate multipurpose usage.

But, despite such storage structures being made mandatory by the Municipal corporation many of them have flouted the rules.

It is high time that the scenes of thirsty people attempting to suck water out of taps or families trekking miles to fetch water wake us out of nonchalance towards the problem and activate us to inculcate the habit of rational utilisation of water.

Every drop saved is every drop stored has often been dinned into our minds and it is high time that we follow this dictum to its logical conclusion for your own sake.
