  • Kakani says villagers are diagnosed with lung disease due to pollution

The MLA interacted with villagers and asked about the impact of the pollution. Villagers brought several issues to the notice of the MLA. Speaking to the media, the MLA said that about 20 villages in Sarvepalli constituency have been facing severe difficulties due to the pollution released from thermal power projects. Greenery was totally damaged in these villages, he lamented. The MLA alleged that villagers affected with lung disease due to the pollution.

‘Villagers were unable to reside in their houses due to power disruption during nights,” said Kakani and added fly ash released by power projects damaging crops in Sarvepalli constituency. The MLA demanded the managements of power projects to take pollution control measures on war foot basis.

He also pointed out that villages like Gollapalem, Mandapam, Isakadoruvu, Chandrasekharapuram, Eduru, Edurupalem, Mamidipudi, Thallapudi, Musunuruvaripalem and also Salipeta in Thotapalli Gudur mandal; Varakavipudi, Ananthapuram, Harijanawada, Mittapalem, Nelaturupalem in Muthukur mandal are affected due to fly ash released from the thermal power projects.

“We are not opposing the thermal power projects in the district. We are demanding the managements to take pollution control measures for the benefit of local population,” said Kakani. He alleged that Sembcorp Gayatri power project had betrayed villagers in Sarvepalli constituency, who gave their lands to the firm. It failed to provide employment to the local youth, he added.

The YSCRCP MLA also said that they would bring the issue to the notice of YSRCP president YS Jaganmohan Reddy for an action plan. The MLA questioned why the Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Board (APPCB) authorities were not responding on the issue. He alleged that thermal power managements had diverted funds of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) for some other purpose instead of developing villages.
