Proposal for construction of Central jail pending
Proposals for the construction of a Central jail in the capital region of Krishna and Guntur districts has been pending for more than two years as the government had failed to allocate land to the prisons department. The prisons department has been asking for the allotment of land after bifurcation of the state as the state had lost some big jails to Telangana state.

Consequently, capital region of Krishna and Guntur districts left without a big jail at least to lodge about 400 prisoners. The existing district jails in Vijayawada and Guntur were built during the British rule many decades ago and not able to cater to the needs of the prisons departments.
Now, the prison department officials strongly feel that there is a necessity for the construction of high tech and high security Central jail near Vijayawada or near Guntur. Krishna district jail located in Vijayawada was built in 1905 by the British government. More than 250 prisoners are lodged against the capacity of only 160 prisoners in the jail. It was built in less than 1.20 acres land in those days.
British rulers used to build a jail, court, police station and tahsildar office for the administrative purposes. Still, court, jail and tahsildar office continue on the same premises in Vijayawada for over 100 years. The prisons department has asked the CRDA to allocate 25 acres land in the CRDA region for the construction of a Central jail in Guntur district. But the request was turned down. Instead, the government came forward to allocate 150 acres forest department land near Nuzvid for the construction of Central Jail. But, the land was not handed over to the prisons department, said superintendent Krishna district jail Ch Nityanandam.
He said the prisons department is ready for the construction of a Central jail in the capital region and been waiting for the allotment of adequate land near Nuzvid. He recalled that earlier the land owned by prisons department in Gannavaram was handed over to other department for the construction of an IT Park.
Prisoners, who got less than two years imprisonment, will be jailed in the district jails. Prisoners, who were awarded more than two years, will be shifted to Rajamahendravaram Central jail. Shifting these prisoners from Vijayawada and Guntur is also a risky one sometimes some hardcore prisoners may escape or skip.
Most of the prisoners lodged in the districts jails are in the age group of 20 to 40 and there is scope for the transformation in their behaviour, said an advocate K Murali. He said skill development is very useful to the prison inmates because it will give confidence to them.Existing small jails are not suitable for conducting skill development classes. But, classes like yoga and meditation are conducted for the prisoners.
