Tirupati: Over the years, the Law department in the Sri Venkateswara University (SVU) has lost its prestige and good will due to scarcity of teaching staff, technical and administrative problems. Once the department used to be vibrant and churned out brilliant law graduates, who later became national repute legal experts and judicial officials.
Highlights:
- Faculty of Law lacks teaching and non-teaching staff
- Varsity stopped offering 3-year degree course 30 years back
- Alumni of SVU Law dept are working in prestigious national law institutions
Prominent among them are Prof Harigopal Reddy, former Vice-Chancellor of Acharya Nagarjuna University, former AP High Court Justice PS Narayana, Justice Govindarajulu, the Chairman of the Administrative Tribunal, former Indian Law Institute executive members Prof Hemalatha and Prof VRC Krishnaiah.
They had worked at national-level law institutions and are alumni of the SVU Law department. The Law department had started at SVU in 1970 with 3-year LLB course. In 1976, varsity started LLM course. At present, the SVU is running 5-year LLB course with intake of 60 seats and LLM course with 12 seats. The SVU stopped offering 3-year LLB course 30 years back due to technical reasons.
The department is facing severe shortage of teaching faculty. Total sanctioned permanent faculty for the Law department is 2 Professors, 1 Associate Professor and 1 Assistant Professor. At present, only one Assistant Professor is working in the department and remaining six teaching staff are working as academic consultants on outsourced basis.
Students are not opting for the courses being offered by the Law department in the campus as it lacks efficient teaching hands. In 2016-17, only 33 students have joined 5-year LLB course from the total sanctioned strength of 60 seats. Clearly, it indicates declining standards in the Law department.
According to sources, the SVU had failed to appoint sufficient teaching faculty and resolve issues in the last three decades. The varsity is not offering 3-year LLB course despite having huge demand. Officials are not willing to start the course due to lack of teaching and non-teaching staff.
Recently, the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) committee members also questioned shortage of teachers in the Law department during their visit. Speaking to The Hans India, SVU V-C A Damodaram said that varsity is trying to recruit teaching staff for the Law department. He further said that the varsity has plans to restart 3-year law degree course.
