Vijayawada: Agricultural department office building and its valuable site at Bhavanipuram in Vijayawada has been lying vacant for more than two-and- half decades and no officer has bothered about the site. About 200 square yards site near Durga Fly-over at Bhavanipuram is unused.

Agricultural department had constructed a building for the use of Vijayawada urban and Vijayawada rural mandal agricultural officers at Bhavanipuram in Vijayawada. This was very useful for the department as well as farmers of urban and rural areas.
Since 1996, the two agricultural officers were shifted to the office of assistant director (AD) of agriculture located at Benz Circle in the city. After that, no officer has concentrated on this building and repairs, sources said.

According to department officers, agricultural office building was in a dilapidated condition. For that reason, office had been shifted to AD’s office. At Bhavanipuram, site value is increasing steadily ever since the city given capital status. Most of the vacant lands in the city were encroached by land grabbers. Agricultural office building site value is more than Rs 1 crore. Earlier, several land grabbers tried to encroach the site but failed, the local people said.

Vijayawada rural mandal villages are known for agricultural activity and most of the people have been cultivating paddy. Interestingly, rural mandal villages are situated around the city. In this scenario, the department officers should take initiative and construct new building for agriculture department, suggested a farmer A Subba Rao of Gollapudi.

When contacted, rural mandal agricultural officer (AO) B Murali Kishore said that Bhavanipuram building was not suitable for office maintenance. He further said that the building was being used for material storage. As per request of farmers, the department vacated the building and set up agricultural office at AD’s office in Vijayawada for the convenience of farmers, he said. Proposals were sent to the government for releasing funds for repairs. After completion of repairs agricultural office would be shifted to Bhavanipuram, he added.
