Pithapuram: Police arrested CPM leaders including CPM East Godavari district committee secretary Duvva Seshu Babji on Monday when they visited Ramanakkapeta to supervise Rytu Sadassu arrangements to be held on Tuesday in the SEZ village.

The Special Economic Zone requires at least 10,000 acres. However, farmers in 2000 acres refused to part with their land for the SEZ. In the context, the CPM is holding a Rytu Sadassu on Tuesday. They visited the village on Monday to supervise the arrangements for the event when the police took them into custody.

Pithapuram circle inspector B Appa Rao, sub-inspectors Venkateswara Rao and V Koteswara Rao brought the situation under control. Many people’s organisations, including the CITU, DYFI, AIDWA and SFI condemned the arrest and described it as a blow to democracy.
