Pilgrim city limping back to normalcy
The pilgrim city which was battered by heavy rains for the last two days is limping back to normalcy. Tirupati Municipal Corporation (TMC) and revenue authorities have plunged into action to extend help to the rain affected people. The TMC officials have appointed special officers and deployed staff to oversee relief measures on Tuesday night.

The works for removing the uprooted trees and collapsed hoardings has commenced from the early hours of Wednesday. APSPDCL employees have restored the electric lines and polls.The inundation of several roads caused by the heavy downpour in two spells accompanied by gales amply revealed the substandard works worth Rs 25 crore were taken out in December 2016 for the Indian Science Congress (ISC) which was held in Tirupati from January 3-7.
Beautification works, road repairs and other works were carried out to give a facelift to the city ahead of the ISC. These rains proved the poor quality and lack of proper study before taking up the ISC works which has resulted in inundation of several roads. Even, the rainwater which mixed with the overflowing drains and filth entered the Municipal Corporation office, exposed the hollowness of civic authorities.
The roads which could not withstand the two hour rains clearly show their fate in the coming rainy season.In November 2015, the city experienced heavy rains. Then the corporation authorities have widened several canals and drainages by removing encroachments.
The electric lines were also in the poor state, resulting to the power disruption even for small rains. Yasoda Nagar, Madhura Nagar, Railway Colony, Korlagunta Kothapalli and other areas up to Auto Nagar were getting knee deep water from Malwadi Gundam and Kapila Theertham. Pulavani Gunta and Korameenu Gunta areas were inundating as they were tanks once.
The city witnessed 95.4 mm rainfall till Wednesday morning whereas Tirupati rural mandal recorded 45.2 mm.
Pulicherla mandal experienced a rainfall of 84.4 mm, Renigunta 46.2, Chandragiri 24.2 and Pakala 16.8 mm. The total rainfall in the district for the day was 341.6 mm and the average was 22.8 mm.Speaking to The Hans India, TMC Commissioner C Hari Kiran said that special teams were working on restoration works. He asked city residents to register their complaint with 103 call centre so that the corporation staff will attend the relief works on war footing.
He said that civic body has identified the problems arose out of the overflowing of drains. They will take concrete steps immediately so that these problems will not be repeated in the next rainy season, he stated. The corporation workers are pumping the water out of the under bridge near DR Mahal by using 15 HP motor. Already, instructions were given to the Engineering department on various relief measures to be taken up, the Commissioner said.
