APERC norms for compensation lauded

Vijayawada: Supreme Court judge Justice N V Ramana opined that AP Electricity Regulatory Commission (APERC) regulations for the payment of compensation to victims of electrical mishaps would be very useful and praised the APERC for bringing reforms in the department.
He said that reforms would bring many changes in the administration and common people would have benefits. Justice NV Ramana along with the chairman of the APERC Justice G Bhavani Prasad and other officials on Monday released Electrical Accidents Regulation-2017 brochure. APERC conducted interactive session with the stake holders to mark the occasion.
Addressing the gathering, Justice Ramana said about 500 people die every year in the state due to electrocutions. “These regulations provides for payment of Rs 5 lakh compensation in case of loss of life, between Rs.1 lakh to Rs.5 lakh for permanent physical disability and between Rs.20,000 to Rs.1 lakh for injuries,” he informed.
He recalled that when reforms were introduced in the energy department there was stiff opposition from the people but these reforms were useful to the people as they get compensation for the loss. APERC chairman G Bhavani Prasad has said that from now on there would be a uniform policy in the state for the payment of compensation to the victims or the to the kin of victims.
He said the APERC has clearly laid down the rules and regulations for payment of compensation, safety standards to be maintained by the energy department, quantum of compensation, medical expenses etc.APERC member P Rama Mohan and other officials were also present.
