Tirupati: B Venkatesh and Nagaratnam, a poor couple from Vajrakarur in the backward Ananthapuram district, are waging a grim battle for a reunion with their nine-month old ‘abducted’ son Chennakesava for over a week at Tirumala, abode of Sri Venkateswara Swamy.

After fulfilling their vow to the shrine, the couple took a fresh vow not to get off the hills until their son is traced and handed them by the police. Venkatesh and Nagaratnam stayed put outside the Tirumala police station where they lodged a complaint seeking to know the whereabouts of child.

They sleep on the pavements outside the police station at nights and desperately search for their son around in day time. This has become a routine for them for over a week since Chennakesava has gone missing. “We were fast asleep with our three children on our side on that fateful night. By the time we were awake the next morning, the little boy was not found,” a sobbing Nagaratnam told The Hans India. Chennakesava was the youngest son.

The couple came to the hills for a darshan of the shrine along with several other families from their village on June 7. When the others left for home, the couple resolved not to leave the temple premises till they regained their lost son. “He can’t even walk now. I am sure, he was kidnapped by a gang,” said Venkatesh while urging the police to expedite the search operations.

However, the police remain clueless even eight days after the child missing. A high-level meeting with senior police officers was held in Tirupati on Tuesday to take stock of the progress in search operations undertaken by special police parties. The teams are learn to cross the state borders and continued with their task in Tamil Nadu and even Karnakataka.

Meanwhile, the hand of a child adoption racket is suspected in the missing of Chennakesava. The racket is said to be operating with the motto of selling the abducted children to the issueless couple for attractive prices, it is alleged. Ten police teams were constituted and they were on the job with the help of police from the two states.

Pictures of known offenders involved in child abduction cases were widely circulated in an attempt to track the accused. Tirumala Two Town CI Venkat Ravi, who is leading one of the searching teams, said, “we are searching continuously for Chennakesava for last eight days.

More than 10 police teams are working on abductions seriously. Tirupati urban police has taken this abduction case as challenge. Presently, we are analysing the Majestic Bus Station CCTV camera footage in Bengaluru with the help of Karnataka police. We have circulated child and suspected kidnappers’ photos to Karnataka and Tamil Nadu police.”
