Srikakulam: Srikakulam district would be declared as smoke- free as 90 per cent families have gas connections as on June 7. In all, 2,70,677 families have been sanctioned gas connections so far across the district under Prime Minster Ujwala Yojana (PMUY) and Deepam.

In addition to it, another 12,957 connections were sanctioned to the poor as part of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). Besides the above gas connections under various government schemes, 3,76,652 have general gas connections who are paying subsidy price to cylinder.

Out of the total 8, 22,886 white card families, 6,47,329 families have been given gas connections so far across the district. Total 1, 75, 557 families have yet to get gas connections and out of the 94,000 families have no eligibility to get gas connections due to various reasons.

Of them 17,035 families are residing in thatched houses as per norms gas connection cannot be granted for families who are residing in thatched houses. Another 53,624 families submitted their affidavits as they are already using gas connections under other schemes. Total 18,185 families have been migrated to other areas.

Due to death of 224 persons, who were residing as single member family, no need of gas connections further. Another 3,185 gas connections were identified as duplicate due to double applications from the same family. Over 267 families are not required gas as they are either single or old age and unable to cook for themselves. Another 1,480 families have no ration cards. Remaining 81, 557 families are eligible to get gas connections.

“Out of 81,557 about 50,000 families applications are under process under PMUY, Deepam, CSR schemes and they would be given connections soon, gas connections for remaining 31,557 families would be cleared in 10 days”, district supply officer P Nageswara Rao said.

“We are sanctioning gas connections under both PMUY and Deepam schemes to all rural people by motivating them frequently,” said Bharath Gas Agency dealer Burra Bhargav.
