Pithapuram: Opposing the GST, the weavers on Wednesday observed a bandh in Gollaprolu and took out a massive rally in Tatiparti. Weavers came onto the streets sensitising workers on the tax and raised slogans against the Centre and the GST policy.

According to weavers’ association general secretary Anjuri Chakradhara Rao, there are 20 master weavers in Tatiparti because of whom the weavers in Tatiparti, Durgada, Vannepudi, Gollaprolu, Chebrolu, Dharmavaram and 12 other villages are getting work.

Imposing GST on handloom textiles would burden the weaver community indirectly, he said and expressed anguish over the Center’s move. Agriculture and handloom are akin like two eyes to the country. He added that the weavers would condemn any act that would jeopardise any of the two sectors.

Master Weavers’ Association president Kundeti Venkateswara Rao said that a major protest programme has been planned in front of the Collectorate at Kakinada on Thursday. As a prelude to it, a huge rally was organised in Tatiparti on Wednesday. Weavers Kada Gangadhara Rao, Kaki Subba Rao, Katta Babu Rao and Bulleswara Rao and others participated in the rally.
