Traders say GST will hit biz

Thousands of textile traders in the city have been agitating by closing their businesses for four days. The agitation proved a success. The traders allege that the GST would be imposed on yarn (18 per cent), printing (12), embroidery (5) and finished product (5).

The textile traders located at Vastralatha complex and Krishnaveni Market complex in old city voluntarily closed shops. They told ‘The Hans India’ that their businesses were already dull since demonetisation. Even before they revive from the shocks of demonetisation, other curbs on spending had scared many customers that led to losses to the wholesale business, they said.
The traders are saying that the sales would come down drastically, if the tax is 12 per cent and 18 per cent ultimately affecting the trading activity.Meanwhile, textile traders are divided over the closure of shops. While wholesale traders of Vastralatha and Krishnaveni complexes in One Town closed their shops, retail traders in Besant Road, MG Road and other parts of the city continued their business as usual.
Retailers are trying to clear their stocks fearing that the GST would be collected on the old stocks too after implementation of the GST. Textile traders under the banner of AP Textiles Federation (APTF) are strongly opposing the GST for two weeks and closed shops across the State for four days.
Footwear manufacturers and traders have been demanding that the Centre reduce GST from 18 to 12 per cent. They took out a rally from Hanumanpet to Benz Circle as part of their protest on Friday. The furniture traders are also opposing the GST which would affect their business, they alleged.
