Kurnool: With scanty rainfall in the district which is already reeling under severe drought, Deputy Chief Minister KE Krishnamurthy will be conducting Varuna Yagam to appease rain gods. A three-day yagam starting from July 14 to 16 would be performed at Rambotla temple in the city. The minister disclosed this to media during a press conference held at his residence on Thursday.

KEK said for the past few years very nominal rainfall was being recorded in the district with which the groundwater level had drastically dipped. With this, the farmers, particularly belonging to western region, are facing lot of hurdles. To save the farmers on all fronts, the government has taken several initiatives like digging of farm ponds, recharging of borewell structures, desilting at ponds and strengthening of farm bunds but none of these served the purpose, he stated.

Murthy further said that Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu in order to save the crops had introduced the rain gun system. “With this, we could be able to save the crops from withering to some extent but not entirely,” he said. Accepting the fact that rain guns would serve no purpose until and unless water is available abundantly at farm ponds, he said that Varuna Yagam is the only solution to appease the rain gods.
