Srikakulam: The officials of education and police departments initiated anti-ragging drive in all the PG, degree and professional colleges across the district. The officials at the BR Ambedkar University (BRAU) in the district began a campaign against ragging through posters and banners as admissions in all courses have been completed.

In the district, a university, 10 post graduate colleges, 12 government degree colleges, 75 private degree colleges, 10 engineering, 7 management, two pharmacy, two agriculture, 14 Bed and 9 Ded colleges are being run.

According to the Andhra Pradesh Prohibition of Ragging Act, 1997, any act of abuse relating to mental, physical and emotional, undermining human dignity, use of force, financial exploitation, extortion, criminal intimidation and wrongful restraint will attract punishment.

Whoever is involved in ragging would be expelled from the college and such students will not receive scholarships and other facilities like hostel accommodation and they would not be allowed to appear for the examinations.

As per the Act, anti-ragging committees should be set up in all colleges and institutions. In Srikakulam, all managements of the professional colleges have been directed to start them.

BR Ambedkar University Srikakulam in-charge Vice-chancellor Gollapalli Nageswara Rao and Registrar Gunta Thulasi Rao directed all PG and degree colleges to conduct anti–ragging awareness drive. At BRAU, campus, posters were pasted and banners were displayed at all conspicuous places over ragging and its repercussions.

Speaking to The Hans India here on Friday, BRAU Registrar, Gunta Thulasi Rao said “After reopening the colleges, we started an anti-ragging drive at BRAU campus and directed all colleges affiliated to the University to begin anti-ragging drive to see its entire removal from the educational institutions.”
