Ongole: The medical students and house surgeons in the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences, Ongole, launched an indefinite protest in front of the hospital building demanding the permanent registration for the college from Medical Council of India. The junior doctors called off the outpatient, wards and surgeries duties but attending only emergency and casualty cases.

The inspection committees from the MCI rejected the permanent recognition to the RIMS for three times. The last committee rejected the application because the library has only 6,800 books for 7,000 books, the fifth X-Ray unit is not functioning and there is a window at one of the X-ray rooms.

The hospital management has rectified the issues and sent a request for the revisit by the committee, but there is no response from the MCI. The students are worrying about their future as the temporary recognition by the MCI is about to end in a month and their education for all the years in RIMS will go waste if the college does not get the permanent recognition by then.
