Chittoor: Demolition of 50-year-old municipal shopping complex in the city has caused widespread resentment among the shopkeepers. There are 40 shops in the shopping complex. The Chittoor Municipal Corporation (CMC) workers began demolition of old structure from Monday and expected to complete by Wednesday evening.

Speaking to The Hans India here on Tuesday, Chittoor Municipal Commissioner G Balasubramanyam said that there was a proposal to construct a five-storey commercial complex at a cost of Rs 35 crore in the vacant land located at old municipal bus stand.

He stated that a mega shopping complex would come up shortly in the place of old one. “A commercial bank has agreed to extend loan for construction of the new shopping complex. Chittoor MLA D A Satyaprabha and city Mayor K Hemalatha are convincing the bank for sanctioning loan to the proposed commercial complex,” he added. He admitted that the development works relating to Kattamanchi Tank are going at snail pace due to funds shortage.

He exuded confidence that all the pending proposals for construction of new structures in the place of old ones would be materialised soon. The civic body must forgo monthly rentals to a tune of Rs 2 lakh due to demolition of the old shopping complex.
