The Zilla Parishad Chairperson was the chief guest at the World Breastfeeding Week celebrations jointly organised by World Vision, an NGO, and child and women’s welfare department here on Wednesday.

Workers of Aasha, Anganwadi and Auxiliary Nurse Midwifery (ANM), along with nursing students, took out a massive rally from the Zilla Parishad Junction to the Collectorate via Panchayati Office.

The Zilla Parishad Chairperson spoke on the importance of mother’s milk to foster the growth of the child. The mother should feed her child within an hour after birth for her own health as well as that of the newborn as breastfeeding keeps mother and child hale and hearty.

She reiterated that the government was granting maternity leave to working women so that they could breastfeed their babies at home.

Speaking on the occasion, ICDS project director Chinmaya Devi recalled that the World Breastfeeding Week celebrations take place from August 1 to 7 every year to create awareness among the women. This year the theme was popularising the links between breastfeeding and the sustainable development goals.World Vision member Chanukya and others took part in the event.
