Vijayawada: It seems the city police did not learn nothing from past experiences wherein traffic on MG Road was diverted to give way to VVIPs causing a lot of inconvenience to common man. They tested patience of commoner for about six hours by seizing the road for traffic on Saturday.

People suffer as traffic came to a grinding halt, especially on Route No. 5 which is the alternative way shown by the traffic police for MG Road traffic

Because of poor planning, they spoiled the valuable time of people who were trapped in traffic logjam. The sultry weather added to the woes of commuters in packed buses and helmet-wearing bike riders. The city probably never witnessed people sufferings so much on chocked roads, especially Route No 5 which was the alternative way shown by the traffic police for entire MG Road traffic. Two ambulances were also trapped in the blockage.

It all began with pre-planned Air Force recruitment rally. If the officials planned the road stretch from Indira Gandhi Municipal Corporation Stadium to Old Bus Station, the traffic police should have been alert over collapse of city traffic. Without proper planning, the vehicular movement between Kaleswara Rao Market to Jammi Chettu (Route No 5) was almost paralysed for hours together. As everyone want to come out of the traffic jam, three queue lines formed on the congested road.

The impact of traffic jam had its echo in places from Gollapudi to Sitara Centre and Chittinagar to KR Market. The low-bridge area was also chocked by the irregular movement of traffic. It was the common man who suffered the most. Many workers attending their duties in Autonagar and other places and students attending special classes were trapped in traffic.

“I boarded the bus at Gollapudi to reach Benz Circle to attend special classes. It took three hours to reach the destination,” said R Vinod, a Class XII student.

“I am new to the city. I am supposed to alight at St Ann’s Hospital. Now, with route diverted towards Besant road, I must take another vehicle like to reach the hospital,” said K Sarada, an old woman and patient.
