Eluru: Heavy rains lashed the agency mandal of Polavaram on Sunday early hours, causing inundation of various colonies in Polavaram village and other areas of Itukalakota village.
The Polavaram Mandal has received heavy rainfall of 128 MM., just in four hours from wee hours of Sunday to8.00 AM. The officials said that last 24 hours rainfall was recorded as 128.0 MM in Polavaram. Most of the rain occurred after midnight and in the morning, they added.
Highlights:
- Due to the heavy rain, Nutanagudem, BNC Colony, Bapuji Colony and many low lying areas in Polavaram village have been inundated
- The rainwater has entered into the houses in the wee hours when all the inmates were asleep
Due to the heavy rain, the rivulets of Sunnalagandi, RavikamgandiKalva were flooded with rainwater and flown on the Itukala Kota village, which is at the delivery point of Polavaram Right Main Canal (PRMC) to Pattiseema Lift Irrigation Scheme (PLIS) pumps. Due to these flash flooda, about 15 houses were partially damaged and the utensils and urea bags were washed away in the rainwater. As the rain and floodingoccurred in the wee hours when all the inmates were asleep there was no time to save their belongings.
About 1,500 odd-populated Itukalakota was situated nearer to the Polavaram Right Main Canal (PRMC) and the delivery point of Godavari water from PLIS pumps also situated at the village. The villagers said that as there was no outlet to the rainwater, they are facing severe problems during the floods and rains.
“We told when the PRMC was constructed nearer to the village that there is no drainage system or outlet from the village. However no official has listened to our problem” said SunnamGangajalam, a resident of Itikalakota village. The outlet channel constructed as under vent of PRMC is a narrow one, and it cannot take the flood or rainwater from the village, he added.
We are requesting the officials to construct a big canal for the free flow of water during floods and rainy season.
However, no officials heard our agony”, he added. Meanwhile, Mandal Tahsildar M Mukkanti along with staff reached Itukalakota and enumerated the losses of the houses.
Due to the heavy rain, Nutanagudem, BNC colony, Bapuji Colony area, lowlying areas in Polavaram village have been inundated. The rainwater has entered into the houses. The outer road constructed on the stretch of Godavari embankment has no trench to take the water into the Godavari and water stagnated in the low-lying areas.
The villagers said that the clay on the outer road of the Polavaram has been washed away to the low-lying areas. The roads are now filled with clay, they added. The villagers are requesting the officials to construct a parallel drain like trench along the River Godavari bund and see the rainwater and floodwater flow into the river to save the low-lying areas.
