PDSU, SFI Demand Sacking of Ganta, Narayana From Cabinet

Vijayawada: Protesting against students suicides in corporate junior colleges in the State, members of the Students’ JAC representing different students unions staged a dharna at the RIO’s office here on Saturday.

They staged a protest in response to a call given by the Students JAC State committee leaders. Addressing the gathering, PDSU State president A Ravichand and SFI State president M Mahesh demanded stern action against the managements of Sri Chaitainya, Narayana colleges holding them responsible for students’ suicides.

They demanded closure of the colleges and hostels for which no permission was given by the government. They demanded implementation of Chakrapani Committee and Nirada Reddy Committee recommendations to prevent student suicides.

The student union leaders demanded sacking of Ministers Ganta Srinivasa Rao and P Narayana from the State Cabinet immediately. AISF State vice-president A Rajendra sought implementation of Nirada Reddy committee and Chakrapani committee recommendations. He alleged that the government was intentionally delaying implementation of the recommendations of the two committees. He opposed conducting classes for students during the holidays.

He also demanded action against the colleges violating the government norms. Meanwhile, activists of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidhyarthi Parishad (ABVP) conducted a relay fast at Alankar Centre and demanded CBI inquiry into the student suicides in the Sri Chaitanya and Narayana educational institutions in the State. They expressed concern over the rise in cases of student suicides.

Addressing the gathering, State working committee member Bellapu Raghavendra pointed out that over 500 intermediate students committed suicide due to stress in the corporate junior colleges during the last 12 years.

ABVP leader Vinay urged the government to appoint a Group-1 officer as RIO. Later, the students raised slogans against the government and demanded action against the corporate junior colleges flouting the norms.
