Vijayawada: Protesting against the closure of main entrance on the west side of the PWD Grounds Rythu Bazaar, activists of All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA), Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) and other CPM-affiliated groups staged a dharna in front of the gate here on Sunday.

The gate was closed on September 29 to ease traffic on the road that leads to the Chief Minister’s camp office. A narrow entrance was provided on the east side of the Rythu Bazaar.

CPM State Executive Committee member Ch Babu Rao expressed his solidarity with the protesters. Addressing a gathering, he alleged that the state government was treacherously trying to hand over the land to Chinese firm for taking up the works relating to City Square as part of a plot.

Already, the government had arranged for transfer of land related to PWD Grounds, DGP office and other assets to make way for corporate groups.

The CPM leader alleged that the government had closed the main gate with an ill intention. He accused the government of trying to close the Rythu Bazaar. He said people coming to Rythu Bazaar had been suffering a lot because of the gate’s closure. He threatened the government to intensify agitation if authorities failed to open the gates by November 10.

The CPM senior leader said that the narrow gate was insufficient to the people coming to the vegetable market. There was a chance of stampede if some untoward incident happens there.

The market should be provided with four gates so that consumers could enter and exit the market from all sides. The road was closed with a simple reason that the Chief Minister travels by the road, he added.

There are 325 stalls in the biggest vegetable market in the city. About 12,000 consumers visit every day. DYFI Krishna district secretary Nageswara Rao, AIDWA district secretary K Sridevi, CITU city president Durga Rao and others were present.
