Visakhapatnam: Andhra Pradesh government is likely to give up the practice of according grand welcome to VIPs and people’s representatives with ‘Poornakumbha Swagatham’ temple honours. The Endowments ministry opened a debate on the issue, as several people’s representative right from the elected mandal presidents demanding special treatment during their visits.

Finding fault with this expectation, the Endowment ministry with exception to a very few mostly -- President of India, Vice-President, Prime Minister, Governors and Chief Ministers, has decided to stop such welcome at the temples. Earlier, ‘Poornakumbha Swagatham’ was accorded to Rajas and Zamindars who patronised the temples and priests.

“The temple priests are the representatives of the presiding deities. They should welcome with the honour of Poornakubha Swagatham to the ancestor trustees of the temple only, not others, including endowment minister, MPs, MLAs or others. We are opened a debate on the issue to get the orders with regard to VIP treatment cancelled. However, there is an exemption to the five protocol capacities, including President, Vice-President, Prime Minister, Governors, Chief Ministers and ancestor trustees of the temples,” Minister for Endowments Pydikondala Manikyala Rao told The Hans India.

The ritual has become a common affair with VIPs expecting royal treatment. After the Zamindari system was abolished, temples continued the practice with the political leaders. Several priests and learned pandits of various mutts pointed out to this practice. Presently, the devotees are running the temples. In such a scenario, Poornakhubha Swagatham should be given to each devotee, opined several swamis.
