Visakhapatnam: Marking first anniversary of demonetisation drive, the Left party units in the city observed the Black Day and took out a massive rally from Saraswathi Park to Gandhi Statue at GVMC Office on Wednesday. Meanwhile, the local cadres and leaders of BJP carried out a signature campaign ‘We support transparency – We oppose black money’ to garner support for the note ban move.

After the rally reached GVMC, the Left party leaders recalled what Prime Minister Narendra Modi had said on November 8 last year. “The Prime Minister had assured public to bear with the obstacles post demonetisation for 50 days to take the country on growth trajectory. If it failed, he said that he should be hanged,” said the Left party leaders underscoring that the GDP rate has taken a drastic hit with note ban and GST moves.

They pointed out that 17 bank officers and many civilians have lost their lives due to demonetisation.“Demonetisation and GST have taken a toll on the sectors of the industry, including textiles, steel, real estate and automobile. With this, there has been loss of employment on a massive scale especially in the unorganised sector,” said CITU state president and CPM leader Ch Narasinga Rao.

CPI state assistant secretary J Satyanarayana Murthy claimed that 50 lakh jobs were lost with these two disastrous decisions by the Central government. Anti-Demonetisation Committee comprising teachers, research scholars and students of Andhra University staged a dharna at State bank of India, Andhra University branch.

Addressing the participants, Prof P Arun Kumar, Convener of the Committee, said various measures taken by the Central Government in the name of brining out black money, curbing corruption and stalling funding for extremists on the borders as well as inside the country were proved to be false.

‘Note-ban, first step to eradicate corruption’
