Tirupati: The Municipal Corporation of Tirupati (MCT) officials have failed to locate a suitable land for dumping of garbage being generated in temple city for the last five years. The present waste dumping site is located close to Ramapuram village in Ramachandrapuram mandal. Villagers of Ramapuram have been vehemently opposing dumping of garbage near their village.

Six months ago, they obstructed the vehicles of MCT and registered their protest. The MCT officials have assured the villagers then that they will find a suitable land for dumping the garbage within six months and requested them to allow waste dumping till that time.

The deadline set by the MCT has ended on Thursday, but no site has been finalised till now. Recently, the villagers of Ramapuram have submitted a representation to District Collector PS Pradyumna, Tirupati MLA Suguna and ruling party leaders to impress upon the civic body officials to honour the assurance given to them six months ago.

Few days back, the villagers addressing a press conference alleged that the MCT officials have not yet finalised any alternative location for garbage dumping and residents in the village are suffering from various diseases due to foul smell emanating from the waste.

They requested the officials to solve the dumping yard issue immediately. More than 190 metric tonnes of waste including 40 tonnes of vegetable waste is being generated in temple city every day.

Six months ago, the MCT officials and Jindal company team have visited the sites at Panapakam and Thatikona in Chandragiri mandal and few sites near Mallimadu reservoir.

However, the MCT officials have asked the Jindal company to start waste-to-energy plant at Gajulamandyam in 10 acres land. But, the Jindal company representatives were asking for 20 acres of vacant land to construct the power plant.

People living in Gajulamandyam have raised objections over construction of the power unit. Even, if the people agree then it will take six more months to construct the power plant.

On Thursday, villagers of Ramapuram have agreed for extension of six more months on the request of the Collector. Speaking to The Hans India, MCT Commissioner C Hari Kiran said that they are looking for better location for waste disposal.
