Since January to December, the Visakhapatnam city hosted various international, national and state-level conferences, workshops, seminars, festivals and several colourful events in 2017.
VVIPs, celebrities, educationists, scientists, doctors, international personalities, sports persons, ministers and other key officials from various countries visited the Port City in 2017. Registering most memorable events to the Vizagites, this calendar year is concluding shortly with a most memorable three-day Visakha Utsav from December 28-30.
With a series of large scale programmes, VVIPs visits from state and national level, all the departments and officials have been engaged to make the events as grand success and also received the Chief Minister’s highest satisfaction over the arrangements in all the events.
President of India Ram Nath Kovind, Vice President of India M Venkaiah Naidu, Supreme Court Judges, Union Ministers, US Business Tycoon Bill Gates, International Shuttler PV Sindhu, star cricketers Rohit Sharma, Sikhar Dhawan and MS Dhoni and several film celebrities from the glamour industry visited the city in 2017. Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu almost visited Visakhapatnam twice in every month.
Meanwhile, the city also witnessed demand for Special Category Status. Opposition Leader YS Jaganmohan Reddy arrived in Visakhapatnam in January to participate in a candle light rally. However, the police detained him and sent back to Hyderabad from the airport. Jana Sena chief Pawan Kalyan visited the city and announced his support to DCIL employee’s stir. Both the incidents draw the attention of public across the both Telugu states.
The second Partnership Summit in January, National Food Festival in April, International Innovation Fair in September, International Agri Hackathon in October, National Inter District Junior Athletics Meet-2017 in November, International Education Conference ‘Tech-2017’ in December, SARAS (a national level skillfully crafted products expo December 22 to January 3, 2018) and three-day Visakha Utsav from December 28 to 30 are the major events in 2017.
Besides, the State government, in order to promote tourism had conducted Balloon Festival in Araku and launched the first ever Heli-Tourism in the city. The first ever Aircraft Museum TU-132 is also opened in 2017. The annual naval operational demo Navy Day and President of India presentation of Try Colours to the Indian Navy’s submarine arm were also held in 2017.
National-level boxing championship, One Day International cricket between India and Sri Lanka and inauguration of badminton court in Steel Township by Indian star shuttler PV Sindhu took place this year only. Visakhapatnam also hosted the Telugu Desam Party’s top general body meeting Mahanadu in May this year.
Appointment of Special Investigation Team (SIT) on the large-scale allegations on land encroachments had drawn massive response this year. It is the first of its kind SIT set up by the government comprising IAS and IPS officers. Meanwhile, the government also presented land documents to thousands of people who encroached and constructed houses in the undisputed government lands.
