DRDA on a mission to make women, youth employable
District Rural Development Agency (DRDA) is in the process of establishing 14 Skill Development and Training Centres in all the 14 Assembly constituencies in the district. So far, 1,600 women have been trained in tailoring under an SC Action Plan by spending Rs 10 crore by providing interest free loans for their livelihood activities.

Also, group activities are being financed for setting up domestic and mini-dairies, and raising Ram Lambs. The training centres are in Singanamala, Gooty, Brahmasamudram, Kambadur, Gummaguttam, Madakasira, Nallamada, Gudibanda, Somandepalle and other mandals in the district.
About 6,000 women have been identified by DRDA for skill development in Kadiri town. Many women in poverty were being driven to prostitution and sold to brothels in Mumbai, Pune and other places. Also, the SHG women are being involved in running brick making units at the Nirmitha Kendras of the Housing Corporation.
As many as 63 units are being set up in every mandal headquarters. 11 units have already been started and producing bricks for the housing programme of the government. All bricks are cement bricks for the weaker section housing programme. The DRDA's most successful programme is the employment and skill development programme linked to providing of jobs even in multi-national companies.
In the current year 2017-18, as many as 715 jobs were provided to the rural youth in several multi-national companies through the 42 job melas conducted so far. Pensions were being provided to 3.82 lakh elderly persons, physically handicapped and widows. About 1.6 lakh women in rural areas are also trained in digital literacy through net centres. About 424 women were trained in digital literacy by Tata Consultancy Services.
The women were provided a smart phone and a lap top and they in turn were instrumental in training 1.6 lakh rural women in the district. DRDA Project Director Rama Rao said that 6,000 farmers were formed into Farmers Producers Organisations (FPOs) for carrying on organised business through effective marketing of their farm produce. DRDA has also been given the task to make the district Open Defecation Free (ODF) by 2019 and it is racing against time to achieve the objective.
As many as 61 Panchayats involving 150 villages had already completed building latrines for every household in the said Panchayats. In the second phase 2017-18, as many as 61 more panchayats are now engaged in building of latrines and the remaining of the 340 Panchayats would be completed by 2018-19 year.
By 2019, all 340 Panchayats will be declared ODF Panchayats, according to DRDA PO. Speaking to The Hans India, Rama Rao said that all efforts are being made to make the district ODF and usher in Swachh Anantapur. Works are all progressing on a fast track basis to realise the mission.
