Kurnool: The Congress leaders staged a road blockade on Hyderabad-Bengaluru national highway at Eidgah near Santosh Nagar here on Friday, demanding that the BJP-led NDA government should grant Special Category Status (SCS) to Andhra Pradesh.

Hundreds of vehicles were stranded for few kilometres due to blocking of road. Large number of party workers, who participated in the road blockade, have raised slogans against the Modi government and local party leaders sat in the middle of the road. The National Students Union of India (NSUI) activists took out a bike rally in the city and arrived at protest venue.

After two hours, the cops dispersed the protestors and took former Union Minister Kotla Surya Prakash Reddy and former MLA Madan Gopal into custody and shifted them to fourth town police station. While Kotla was being rushed to the police station, the agitators tried to intercept the police vehicle, but the cops managed to reach station.

Speaking to the media, former Union Minister said that the SCS is the demand of 5 crore people of Andhra Pradesh. He alleged that Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu is more interested in increasing the Assembly seats rather than securing SCS to state. He accused Narendra Modi of cheating the AP people by making several promises during 2014 elections.

The Congress leader stated that people are not happy in Chandrababu and Modi rule. On the other hand, the advocates also staged a road blockade at Tungabhadra River in the early hours of Friday. They demanded that the state government should establish the High Court in Rayalaseema.

NH bandh foiled

The cops arrested nearly 100 Congress activists and leaders as a preventive measure and foiled the planned Congress national highway bandh on Friday, demanding SCS to the state. The Congress leaders, however, took out a rally in the city and staged a rasta roko for a brief while at the Tower Clock Junction in the city.

Later, they were let off. Congress spokesman K V Ramana decried the double standards of the Chief Minister in taking two different positions in the past and in the present over SCS. He urged Chandrababu to shun politics of opportunism.
