Anemia, malnutrition and poor facilities at the government hospitals in Agency and Uddanam areas are leading to death of pregnant women after delivery and death of neo-natal babies. Srikakulam: Anemia, malnutrition and poor facilities at the government hospitals in Agency and Uddanam areas are leading to death of pregnant women after delivery and death of neo-natal babies. Due to lack of nutritious food, pregnant women becoming anemic which is the prime reason for their deaths after delivery. Pregnant women, who are suffering from anemia, needs more blood immediately after delivery of a baby, but it is not available at the government hospitals.

As per sample registration survey (SRS), which is recognised by the Central government, 39 newborns are losing their lives immediately after delivery due to blood scarcity among every 1,000 babies in the district. Mother is being an anemic is also a reason for the death of neo-natal babies.

Similarly, 98 women are losing their lives out of one lakh women after delivery in the district as per the SRS statistics due to anemia and non-availability of blood. Savara Kumari and Savara Malathi, pregnant women of tribal village, Belibadhra and Gedela Laxmi on Mahadevapuram in Mandasa mandal lost their lives last year due to blood scarcity.

Initially, they were admitted to Palasa community health centre (CHC) and died while being shifted to the King George Hospital (KGH) in Visakhapatnam due to non-availability of blood. Karri Rajyalaxmi of Kaviti, Karri Sabitha of Koligam, Pondara Rajulamma of Telukunchi villages in Kaviti and Itchapuram mandals died due to the same reason. Fifteen neo-natal babies also died within 28 days after delivery.

“We found reasons for the death of pregnant women after delivery as non-availability of blood, anemia during verification at Palasa, Sompeta CHCs, Venkatapuram, Mandasa, Kaviti, Koligam PHCs”, Vigilance and enforcement wing SP T Harikrishna told The Hans India.

“We are creating health awareness among pregnant women and reducing deaths of both mother and baby by providing instant medical care”, said district medical and health officer Dr SanapalaTirupathi Rao.
