Vijayawada: Nearly two lakh people belonging to 40,000 families are eagerly waiting for the government's decision on the allotment of house pattas and regularisation of illegal constructions on hill areas in the city.

Though the government announced the allotment of house pattas and regularisation of houses long ago but still no decision was taken in this regard. The leaders of Telugu Desam opined that the issue will play an important role in the winning chances of candidates of ruling party.

Indeed, the Group of Ministers (GoM) took the decision in favour of regularisation and allotment of pattas but the government is yet to take the final decision. The state government gave assurance to the hill area people three years ago. Since then the hill area residents are waiting for the government’s final decision.

The people of poorer sections encroached hills at several areas like Mogulrajapuram, Christurajapuram, Machavaram, Gunadala, Vidyadharapuram, Bhavanipuram and One Town several decades ago. Majority of them even constructed permanent structures while a few of them live in makeshift huts. They have been living on hills for the last several decades and the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation also provided drinking water, roads and street lighting for these dwellers.

But they have no right on their houses or house sites. Now, they are not eligible to get house loan or mortgage their property. In this backdrop, they approached successive governments for house pattas. The Congress government also gave assurance to them in the past but it could not complete the process.

The Telugu Desam actively moved the proposal but it is being neglected in implementation, said former corporator Bobba Srinivasa Rao. Speaking to The Hans India, he said that the government should give pattas immediately without any delay.

He said that the government could not shift these people, who form a large number from hills to anywhere in the city, and there was no alternative option but giving pattas. He said that allotment of house pattas would play an important role in the next elections on the prospects of candidates of Telugu Desam.
