Visakhapatnam: Dean of Sri Ramachandra Medical College and Research Institute and former Vice-Chancellor of University of Madras Prof SP Thyagarajan said that the curriculum in medical education in the country is loaded with more theory rather than practical approach and there is a need to reorient medical education through international linkages.

GITAM Dental College and Hospital celebrated its 12th graduation day on Friday. Speaking on the occasion, Thyagarajan said that dentist population increased during the last two decades in the country, but most of the dentists confined to urban areas.

The number of post-graduate dental seats should be increased particularly that would give greater opportunities to the dental graduates to pursue post-graduation.

The medical practitioners should be aware of patient management, analytical ability and technical experience and communication skills to face the challenges, he added. He advised that GITAM should take initiative to start courses like forensic dentistry and dental ethics for the benefit of dental professionals.

GITAM President Dr MVVS Murthi said that the unmet treatment need of the population is very high and the services present are inadequate in most parts of the country.
