In response to the news item that was published in The Hans India on December 12, 2017 ‘Canal water in city faces pollution threat’, the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) had taken action to prevent throwing solid waste into the canals by pedestrians and street vendors in addition to preventing open urination and open defecation.

Vijayawada: In response to the news item that was published in The Hans India on December 12, 2017 ‘Canal water in city faces pollution threat’, the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) had taken action to prevent throwing solid waste into the canals by pedestrians and street vendors in addition to preventing open urination and open defecation.

The VMC had taken action to prevent activity of throwing solid waste into the canals by pedestrians and street vendors by providing chain link mesh protection along the bridges, and open urination and open defecation have been strictly prohibited along canal bunds by continuously watching and providing toilet facility.

The VMC had conducted door-to-door campaign to educate and mobilise the house owners to connect their household sewage into VMC sewage system instead of letting out into side drains.

The VMC also stated that it had invited request for the proposal for supply, installation and commissioning of municipal waste water treatment plant with advanced technology to Design- Build-Operate and Transfer (DBOT) basis in Vijayawada Municipal Corporation. The VMC had called for bids which may be submitted up to May 5.

The VMC had also initiated to develop greenery along the bridges and canal to restore environment to a healthy state, according to chief engineer P Adiseshu.
