Nellore: Majority parents whose children just now completed SSC are very much concerned over unusual fee structure fixed by the Junior Colleges for mathematics and science streams. Reputed Junior Colleges of good repute were bit ahead with collecting exorbitant fee from the students depending on the coaching for various competitive examinations.

The prevailing education system has failed to regulate the fee structure in Junior Colleges. Even officials also admit that there was no control on these colleges which collect huge fee from the students and the parents were also paying the amount demanded by the colleges.

In city, majority corporate colleges like Narayana, Sri Chaitanya, Gayatri, Viswasai, Ratnam and others have displayed fresh fee structure with their previous victories in the academic and competitive exams. Consequently, they are demanding Rs. 70,000-80,000 for day scholars and Rs.1.30-Rs.1.50 lakh for hostellers for the first year.

Some colleges categorised the structure on the basis of preference for coaching. They fixed coaching on the basis of preparing the children for competitive exams like EAMCET, JEE/IIT, NEET and AIEEE.

“Very few colleges are collecting Rs. 25,000 to 30,000 in the city per annum and majority were ranging between RS. 50,000-Rs. 1 lakh. They are showing ranks in the exams and collecting fee from all the students even though there are no basic amenities like toilets and quality food,” said Nanda Kiran from Student’s Federation of India.

There should be a mechanism to control the ever-increasing fee structure in the colleges. The state government had asked the district officials to form District Fee Regulatory Committees in 2009 through a G.O. for monitoring the system. But, they had become defunct as majority Collectors were not showing interest on them.

The District Collector/Joint Collector is the Chairman and they appoint DEO, DAO and other officials as members in the committee for regulating the fee structure and to decide maximum limit.

The committees are meant for school education where private managements collect huge fee from the students. But, there is no such system in case of intermediate education as majority corporate colleges run by political leaders and influential persons.
