Amaravati: It is predicted that the temperatures in this summer would further increase and heat waves would last for longer durations at some pockets in the State. The abnormal rise in temperatures and long durations of heatwaves are attributed to change in climatic conditions, global warming, deforestation, air and water pollution.

Stressing the need to bring down the temperature levels in the State in general and in capital region Amaravati in particular, Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu directed officials to fill all the water bodies with water up to the brim and full storage capacity. The Chief Minister held a video-conference with officials on Neeru-Pragathi at his residence at Undavalli on Monday.

He said that water bodies like reservoirs, ponds, canals and others must be filled with sufficient water. Cautioning officials to be prepared for taking up precautionary measures in the State, Chandrababu Naidu said that the India Meteorological Department predicted high temperatures during this summer.

Naidu also said that by increasing green cover the temperature levels can be brought down in the State. Farmers should be encouraged to take up drip irrigation, he said.

Stressing the need to reduce temperatures by 10 degrees in the capital region, he said that it would be possible through coordinated efforts among various stakeholders including government and public.

He pointed out that drinking water was being transported through tankers to 525 villages in the State for the last one-and-half months, he said the water supply would continue as long as surface water exists. Chandrababu said that in all these villages and surrounding hamlets, water conservation measures must be initiated and completed before onset of rainy season.

The injection wells dug by Panchayat Raj department in Prakasam district yielded good results and increased groundwater tables. Appreciating the measure, Chandrababu Naidu suggested to officials to dig injection wells in 525 villages to improve groundwater tables. He said that the rain water must reach these injection wells as well as the form ponds. Digging of form ponds should be intensified in the State, he added.

The Chief Minister asked the officials to spend Rs 1,000 crore under MNREGA by the end of this month. The government aimed to spend more than Rs 10,000 crore on MNREGA works in the current financial year and out of it, Rs 1,000 crore would be spent this month, he said.
