Visakhapatnam: Viral fevers, including dengue, malaria and typhoid, are on the rise in the city and rural areas in the district. Many patients are undergoing treatment at area, community, general and private hospitals across the district.

During the past eight months over 10,000 patients are undergoing treatment at government and private hospitals. The officials are saying that the number may cross 15,000 across the district. The medical and health department sources pointed out that this is the highest number in the past one decade.

According to the official records, 4,221 malaria positive cases, 2,542 typhoid, 53 swine flu, 265 dengue, 52 chikungunya and 18 jaundice cases were reported in the past eight months in the district. Meanwhile, many patients, who are suffering from fevers, are coming to the King George Hospital. All the beds in the general ward have been filled with the patients.

Speaking on the rise of fevers among the people, superintendent of KGH G Arjuna attributed the rise due to lack of awareness on the seasonal and viral fevers particularly in the rural areas. He said that the patients initially taking self-medication and once the condition aggravates they are paying a visit to hospitals.

The patients, who are suffering from fevers, were supposed to consult nearest qualified doctor for medication. If, correct medicines were administered in the early stage, the rise of fevers could be prevented, Arjuna said.Meanwhile, the Opposition and Left Parties alleged that the administration had failed to prevent the seasonal and viral fevers in the district.
“The medical and health department and civic authorities are aware of seasonal fevers, but the department had failed to take up preventive measures,” they lamented.

Even in the city limits, 692 malaria and 173 dengue cases were registered with this one could understand how the sanitation in the city limits, he pointed out.
