Rajamahendravaram: YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) state farmers’ wing president M V S Nagi Reddy condemned the state government's decision to mortgage irrigation projects in the state to obtain loans from the banks and appealed to the people to fight against the move.

Participating in a meeting organised against the reported mortgage of irrigation projects by party’s farmers’ wing here on Wednesday, Nagi Reddy questioned the need to mortgage irrigation projects, which never happened in the history. Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu or his Cabinet has no right to mortgage the irrigation projects, he maintained.

“All the projects belong to the people and YSRCP will fight against this decision with the co-operation of other parties in the state. The Chief Minister is increasing the estimates of various projects to get commissions. He is trying to take loans to the tune of Rs 10,000 crore to Rs 20,000 crore and holding discussions with banks in this regard,” he alleged.

According to him, the irrigation projects proposed for mortgage are Vamsadhara Phase II, Pushkara Lift irrigation Scheme, Chintalapudi Lift Irrigation Scheme, Godavari Delta, Somasila Project, Velugonda Projectm SRBC project, Galeru-Nagari project and Handri Neeva project. He appealed to all the parties to come under one roof to fight against this issue.

Farmers’ leader Yerneni Nagendranath said the people would lose right on irrigation projects if the state government mortgages them and added that supply of water also depends on the banks who extend loans. Terming the state government's decision as ‘heinous’, he said that it was nothing but betrayal of state. Asserting that the state government has no right to mortgage projects, Nagendranath said he was ready to go on an indefinite hunger strike against the decision.

YSRCP city-coordinator R S P Rao said the Chief Minister may mortgage the people also if there was any possibility for it and asked the parties to join YSRCP to fight against the move. YSRCP central governing board member Jakkampudi Vijaya Lakshmi said the matter should be taken to the people and also underlined the need to fight against the government.

BJP state executive member Garimella Chittibabu said the party would fight against the government in this regard. CPI and CPM leaders N Rama Rao and T Arun also extended their solidarity with YSRCP on the issue. They alleged that the Chief Minister can mortgage even the cities and towns too. YSRCP farmers wing organising secretary K Trinadh, general secretary A Doraiah, secretary AS Reddy and many others were present.
