Rajamahendravaram: MLC Somu Virraju said everyone should participate in Swachha Bharat programme aimed at improving sanitation conditions across the country.

He recalled that Prime Minister Narendra Modi introduced the programme in October 2014.

Participating in an awareness programme conducted by field publicity wing of the Central government in Sri Venkateswara Anam Kala Kendram here on Thursday, he said because of the programme the sanitation condition in the country was improved to 67 percent from 39 percent four years ago.

The central government allotted Rs 16,496 crore for Swachha Bharat programme out of which Rs 2,300 crore allotted to urban areas and Rs 13,946 crore to rural areas.

Many changes took place in sanitation conditions and the people well received Swachha Bharat programme in the country. He also underlined the need to bring awareness among the people about Swachha Bharat programme.

Urban MLA Dr Akula Satyanarayana said Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a visionary introduced the programme for the benefit of the people and since four years the programme is getting good results. He appealed to the people to become part and parcel of the programme.

Mayor Pantham Rajani Sesha Sai said the government is sanctioning Rs 15,000 for constructing individual lavatories and the corporation is sanctioning the amount immediately to the applicants.

Field publicity officer Shafi said Swachha Bharat is the largest sanitation programme in the world and the Central government is trying to intensify the programme. Many women, corporators and others were present.
