Nellore: Influx of migrant population has been leading to increase in crime rate in the city and consequently police officials are planning to improve CCTV camera network.

They are planning to install around 10,000 CCTV cameras at strategic locations in the city for keeping a continuous vigil on the movement of people and vehicles.

In fact, seasonal migrants search their livelihood in key sectors such as construction, hotel, textile, manufacturing, transportation, services and domestic work etc and their standard of living leads sometimes to criminal activity owing to personal habits like alcoholism and others.

For some periods, property related offences were on the rise in the city and it is essential to reduce crime rate by taking constructive efforts and the officials proposed setting up of huge camera network in public places that would be helpful for resolving cases with concrete evidences.

Many people from districts like Srikakulam, Vizianagaram and Anantapur are preferring the place for domestic labour, construction works and also for agriculture activities. Industrial growth is also pushing influx of migrant population to the city.

Installing such equipment is necessary as per AP Public Safety Enforcement Act 2013. So, police department is also planning to ask industrialists and other traders for setting up cameras in the areas for public safety.

They are also going to create awareness among the traders and others who install CCTV cameras for storing video data for 30-45 days that would be utilised for verification during unexpected incidents and investigation of crimes.

Police vehicles will also be having GPS enabled gadgets for visual policing. A senior police official said that they are also implementing similar measures in all important towns in the district with around 20,000 cameras in the entire district.

It may be recalled that district police felicitated donors some months ago for setting up CCTV cameras in city limits. They had formed a committee and accepted donations from people in the form of DDs and Cheques and deposited the amount in a bank for purchasing cameras.
