Guntur : Political analyst and former MLC Prof. K Nageshwar felt that in the democracy the number of seats should be allotted on the percentage of votes secured in legislatures and said that in the present system there is no relation to votes polled and seats obtained by the parties in the legislatures.

He said some parties are getting more votes, but not getting seats. At a programme held at Sri Venkateswara Vignana Kendram in Guntur on Saturday, he spoke on "Indian Democratic System- Election Reforms." The programme was conducted by Gurram Jashua Vignan Kendram, Guntur.

Prof K Nageshwar reminded that in the last general elections, BJP which secured 31% of votes got 279 seats in the Lok Sabha and came to power and stated that 69% of the voters rejected the BJP.

He reminded that in 2009 elections, BJP which got 18.5% votes, got 116 Lok Sabha seats and reminded that in 2014, though party got 19.3% of votes, it got 44 seats in the Lok Sabha.

He felt that there should be debate on this in democracy. He felt that number of seats should be allotted based on the votes polled. He felt that if this system is adopted, parties which get 5% of votes will get seats in legislative houses, as a result they will discuss people's problems in the legislature.

CPM Central Committee member V Srinivasa Rao said that money influence has been increasing in the elections and felt that there is need to check it.

Gurram Jashua Vignana Kendram Managing trustee Pasam Rama Rao presided over the meeting. Former MLC K S Lakshamana Rao, Y Netaji and J V Raghavulu were among those present.
