Tirupati: Congress leaders at a Padayatra here on Saturday said that the only party that is capable of defeating Prime Minister Narendra Modi to end his autocratic rule and communal approach is the good old national party Congress-led by its President Rahul Gandhi.

The leaders said that in the four-and-a-half-year BJP rule, the country’s economy is in shambles while the poor become poorer and the rich richer. Former Union Minister Dr Chinta Mohan, who led the Padayatra in Indira Nagar slum area in the pilgrim city said development came to a standstill hitting all sections of people more so the poor because of blunders like note ban committed by Modi.

Various constitutional institutions like RBI is under threat, he said, adding that the only way to save the country and people is to get rid of Modi as early as possible.

The senior Congress leader said the pilgrim city witnessed an all-round development during the previous Congress rule with development of hospitals and national highways in a big way but now under the BJP rule, there is not even a single development initiative was taken up.

He was also highly critical of TTD officials whom he said acting as despots ignoring the locals and also splurging pilgrim money.

Mohan demanded L1 Darshan once in a month for 5,000 locals and also darshan during Vaikunta Ekadasi and said that it is not proper for TTD officials slighting the locals and warned of an agitation if the demands were not conceded.

He said the Padayatra which is taken up as part of Party’s mass contact programme would continue to cover all the localities in the city.
