Civic body moots home compost plan from January
Buoyed with the positive outcome of plastic ban and prohibiting public urination and open defecation, the Municipal Corporation of Tirupati MCT embarked on home composting for further improvement of urban sanitation in the pilgrim city
Tirupati: Buoyed with the positive outcome of plastic ban and prohibiting public urination and open defecation, the Municipal Corporation of Tirupati (MCT) embarked on home composting for further improvement of urban sanitation in the pilgrim city.
To begin with, the MCT advised all its employees, about 1000, to take up home composting at their residences. It will be extended to 5,400 homes in the first phase beginning from January 1.
Speaking to media here on Monday, Municipal Corporation Commissioner V Vijay Rama Raju said that the Corporation on its own set four components to score high rank at national level in Swchh Survekshan.
The four including segregation of waste, plastic ban, ban on urination and defecation in open and home compost. Commissioner said that the corporation had already introduced the first three components and got positive results in city in sanitation..
The Corporation’s recent success in plastic ban in the city prompted us to take up measures for better sanitation,’’ Raju said while explaining the reason for the corporation to take up home compost.
After the good response from our employees, the Corporation roped in the women SHGs and NGOs in the city to motivate and train the residents to opt home compost, he said adding that the corporation has decided to provide buy back facility for the compost produced by the residents.
The Tirupati Urban Development Authority (TUDA) will buy the compost from the town level Federation of women SHGs who procure compost from the residents. Raju said that simultaneously, the corporation will take up a special drive to encourage the residents to take up growing of vegetables and green leaves using their home compost.
