Visakhapatnam: Senior Scientists of Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) M Venkata Ratnam and RK Singh highlighted that nuclear energy is being converted into many useful forms by the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) and BARC.
Vignan Group of Engineering Institutions have organised an Outreach Programme on Friday at Vignan’s Institute of Information Technology (Autonomous), Duvvada in association with Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) and Nuclear Power Corporation India Limited (NPCIL).
While interacting with the students, the both scientists informed that the BARC was trying to create awareness among public and students on nuclear energy so that they could accept one of the useful energy sources.
They highlighted that nuclear radiation would be used to preserve food, to treat food and water, to desalinate sea water and to treat cancer. The nuclear medicine was one of the advanced medical technologies to treat hazardous cancer, Venkata Ratnam said.Speaking on the occasion, Prof P V G D Prasad Reddy, former Rector, Andhra University, asked students to be practically exposed so that they would get opportunities in government and private sector organisations.
The nuclear power and solar power were pollution-free and they were cheap to produce, Reddy added. Some of the countries including France and Germany depend on nuclear power only, he said. P B Setti, Additional Chief Engineer, Kovvada Nuclear Power Project, gave a presentation on construction of nuclear power projects and explained on power projects dynamics and requirements.
Senior Scientist Dr M V Suryanarayana gave a presentation on career opportunities in BARC and DAE. Students were asked to choose a career in nuclear science and engineering. Dr Padma Savithri briefed on uses of radiation in protecting environment, in cancer treatment and food preservation.
The dignitaries have formally inaugurated the expo. BARC has exhibited many models including reactors, power projects, desalination plants and agriculture treatment plants. Students from schools and colleges in the region experienced the expo.
