Vijayawada: On the occasion of Bhogi, Sri Durga Malleswara Swamivarla Devasthanam here witnessed heavy rush of devotees on Monday. Temple priests performed special pujas for ‘Bhogi Mantalu' (bonfire) and prayed for the prosperity of farmers across the country as Sankranti is the festival of farmers.

A special bonfire was arranged on the temple premises in the early hours and the 'Gangireddu Vinyasalu' (bull dance) programme was organised reflecting the culture and tradition of the villages. The temple management got a huge response from the children as well as elders for the ‘Bommala Koluvu’ arranged at Maha Mandapam at the Kanaka Durga Temple premises atop indrakeeladri.

Traditional Kondapalli and Etikoppaka toys explaining Indian tradition were on display at the ' Bommala Koluvu'. Senior citizens and couples who were deserted by their children were given special care to offer prayers to the Goddess, Later, they were given Kunkuma Prasadam and Anna Prasadam.

Till January 16, all senior citizens and couples who were deserted by their children will be given special care, the temple authorities said. Devotees coming from old-age homes and senior citizens shall register at Mallikarjuna Mahamandapam or call toll free number 18004259099, or contact the PRO on 9949390234, 7799200228 for the temple to provide better services to them, according to the temple authorities.
