Vijayawada: One person who consumed rat poison, alleging that the police had been harassing him, died while undergoing treatment in a private hospital here on Wednesday. The deceased was identified as Gantikota Koteswara Rao, 22, a resident of Rajiv Nagar Colony of Buddhavaram village in Gannavaram mandal.

Koteswara Rao consumed poison near the Gannavaram police station on Tuesday alleging that the police had been harassing him following a complaint lodged by a local woman on a petty dispute. A local woman lodged a complaint on January 19 alleging that two persons had beaten her over a petty dispute. The police asked them for questioning two days.

According to Gannavaram police, two youth Gandikota Koteswara Rao and Nakka Ramanjaneyulu were facing allegations of harassing a local girl. Based on the complaint given by the woman parents, the police took the two youth to police station for questioning. On the otherhand, the two youth upset with the attitude of the police, consumed rat poison to commit suicide.

They were shifted to a private hospital in Gunadala on Tuesday. One of the victim Koteswara Rao died while undergoing treatment. The family members have alleged that the police were responsible for the death of Koteswara Rao and demanded action should be taken against the police for harassing the two youth. Ramanjaneyulu was undergoing treatment in the hospital. Gannavaram police are investigating the case.
